The tradition of Moroccan cosmetics

The Moroccan cosmetic tradition is made up of natural beauty treatments for body care and is rich in ancient customs , ancestral secrets and intoxicating rituals .

Starting from the now very famous Hammams, which are truly sacred places of well-being and relaxation, in the westernmost extreme of Africa in this wonderful country, rich in colors and scents, recipes of beauty based on natural products used for massages, scrubs, facial cleansing and even make-up.

Starting from Argan oil , which due to its exceptional precious characteristics has been defined as " liquid gold ", up to flower, rose or orange hydrolates, black soap, ghassoul clay and henna .

The cosmetic and healing virtues of Moroccan beauty products, which are now famous throughout the world, are normal routines for Moroccan women despite the frenzy of everyday life of contemporary women.
The main characteristic of Moroccan cosmetics is the emphasis on rituality , well-being and relaxation . It is so rooted in our tradition that children are introduced to it at a very young age, thanks also to the natural ingredients of traditional Moroccan cosmetic products. Furthermore, all traditional products are highly versatile , making a product suitable for multiple uses and applications.

The natural cosmetics of Morocco all revolve around the Hammam , it is a magical place , closed between zellij walls (typical Moroccan decorated tiles), which manages to free from stress and tension .

While the steam and heat of the water open the pores of the skin helping to eliminate toxins , the mind relaxes and the body is enveloped in a pleasant sensation of well-being.

All Moroccan beauty treatments can take place within the Hammam ritual; first of all the scrub with black soap and the Kessa glove , which exfoliate the skin in a natural way.

Masks based on ghassoul clay , Argan oil and rose or orange blossom water can be prepared and applied. These waters with tonic and hydrating properties are still prepared as per tradition in the women's cooperatives in Kelaat Mgouna .

Moroccan ghassoul clay masks are suitable for both the face and hair ; in fact, on the scalp they have cleansing and purifying properties , on the face, however, they have a cleansing, exfoliating, absorbent, detoxifying, fortifying action and are rich in revitalizing minerals , which make them suitable for all skin types .

At the end of the treatment, it is customary for Moroccan women to take a " Henna bath ", which consists of preparing a fairly diluted mixture of water and henna and spreading it all over the body, leaving it to act for a few minutes and rinsing. This makes the skin luminous, fragrant and soft to the touch .

Henna is also a very important pillar of tradition , in fact it is present in all important celebrations, it is used to decorate hands on the occasion of weddings or other important holidays, to dye hair, decorative tattoos and to carry out semi-permanent coloring on the eyebrows and freckles.

The Hammam can be considered concluded with the application of Argan oil to hydrate and nourish the body, face and hair.

Another element of Moroccan cosmetics is the red poppy , also called "Akhar El Fassi" and takes its name from its city of origin, precisely the city of Fez.

Akhar El Fassi or Lipstick of Fez is obtained from poppy petals which give life to a red powder used as lipstick or blush , but also in hair masks for a strengthening action or, if added to Henna, for dye your hair giving a natural copper color .

In this overview of Moroccan cosmetics, Kohl is certainly worthy of note, the Moroccan woman's main make-up tool , used to outline and define the shape of the eyes . Kohl appears as a powder of natural pigments or it is possible to find it in numerous different variations, first of all in the form of a pencil stick or even in jars of Kohl cream, it was once used for its antiseptic properties by both women and for men, today it finds its main use in make up .
